Hammers Everywhere

Yesterday's drop and snap-back rally created hammers all over the place. I have a long list (too long) of buy candidates based on that fact. Like yesterday, I'll be surprised if many of them actually trigger because the GDP report seems to have sucked the early morning enthusiasm out of the bulls. As always, we'll see.

Watchlist for January 29, 2004

Currently holding:
Long - None
Short - None -- Had some winners on the list yesterday, but couldn't get filled on one (damn you NYSE) and just missed a couple of others. Oh well. :-(

Here's the list for Thursday:

Smack Down

We've now had two distribution days in a row in the market. Yesterday's post-Fed selling really did damage to a lot of intermediate-term uptrends. The NASDAQ looks real precarious here. I don't see much support on the daily chart until we hit the 2,000 area, which is the December highs. Its 50-day moving average also happens to sit at 2,001 right now.

Surprisingly I'm still coming up with more long candidates than shorts. I'll be real surprised if they actually trigger though. We'll see.

Watchlist for January 28, 2004

Currently holding:
Long - ARW, LU
Short - None

Here's the list for Wednesday:

Smelly SOX

It was an ugly day today as the NASDAQ erased all of yesterday's gains and then some. Novellus' earnings guidance and a slightly weaker than expected consumer confidence report were the reason for all the selling. The SOX is now back below its middle Bollinger Band and is sitting just 2 points above its 50-day moving average at 515. I think it could fall back to 500 without being technically broken. Should be some (more) interesting action in the semis over the next few days.

SOX Daily

I've been wanting the NASDAQ to pull back to its middle Bollinger Band for a couple of weeks now. A wise man predicted that it may just go sideways until that line rises far enough to meet it. Well that's exactly what's happened to the QQQ today.

QQQ Daily with Bollinger Bands

It seems likely that the same may happen on the NASDAQ in a day or two. I'd still rather have had the NASDAQ drop to the line, but in this market I'll take what I can get.

The Fed's interest rate decision is due tomorrow at 2:15 so I'll be waiting until 2:45 to initiate any swing trades.

Today's rally really snuck up on me. It felt like it was gonna be a real quiet, flat day on the NASDAQ until about 1:30. At that point the market just shot higher. By the close just about any index I could find was at a new 52-week high. The SOX (not at a 52-week high) was able to get back above its middle Bollinger Band but NVLS may drag it back down tomorrow.

We still have a Fed interest rate decision and a ton of earnings reports due this week.

We'll see.
