December 2004 Archives

It's Party Time!

I hope you all have a safe and happy new year. I'm going to try to finish reading 'How to Make Money Selling Stocks Short' before I head out to celebrate the new year tonight. So look for the review over the weekend. I may also post some resolutions. I've never really been one to make (New Years) resolutions but since Michael Taylor has been sweating me about it maybe I'll cave this year. I do have some trading and blogging goals in mind so that may be a good excuse to write them down.

I have to give a special thank you to Adam Schierholz for his very generous donation to me today. As Dave Chappelle would say "I'm rich bi#@$"! Adam made some good coin on a couple of stocks that were in my watchlists recently. I've been wondering if anybody actually trades those stocks. The sad thing is that I never even traded those two stocks. Go figure! Adam is the co-author of what appears to be a very entertaining book about his college experiences, 'What They Don't Teach You at Yale'. You can read a section of the book on his site (PDF). I may have to write something similar about my days at $tanfurd (that's the Berkeley spelling of Stanford).

Now to figure out how to spend that donation money. I'm picturing a bottle of Hpnotiq for starters. :-)

See you all on the other side of midnight.

My scans turned up absolutely nothing for today. The low volume and low volatility has created a ton of "nothing to see here" charts. So I'll continue to just focus on managing my stops and a day trade or two. Speaking of day trades, I see that my new favorite stock, ANTP, is gapping up again. That's one wacko stock!

Here's an article listing 5 important lessons from 2004. (via G's Investing)

Is ANTP Finally a Sell?

I rarely try counter-trend trades but ANTP was just begging to be shorted. And I figured that the 50 area might turn into resistance. This is one from the "try anything but use a stop" school. (An old Todd Harrison quote.) Here's the intraday chart (15 minute candles) followed by the daily chart:

2005 Stock Market Predictions and Resolutions

Alan Farley has written an article detailing his trading resolutions for 2005. Like Taylor, I like the the 'delayed gratification' resolution. I'm always striving to take a longer term approach to my trading. (via TaylorTree)

As for predictions -- I'm so sick of hearing/seeing people making market (and individual stock) predictions for next year. As if anybody knows what's going to happen. So here's the only prediction that's guaranteed to be 99.9% accurate -- Prices will change in 2005! You didn't really think I was gonna make a market call... :-)

Watchlist for December 30, 2004

There's not much on my swing lists today and that's fine with me because I really don't want to do much in this light volume. I'll be content to just manage my stops on my current positions. I may make a sale or two just to free up some cash that's been tied up in positions that are just going sideways.

New Highs on Low Volume

Here are a few charts. First is the Nasdaq which shows the recent new highs on weak volume. That can't end well, can it?

Next is the SOX, which got stopped by its 200-day moving average again today. I knew it wouldn't be easy to conquer that line.

And finally, the chart of Phazar (ANTP) which has been on a ridiculous run recently. It's up 1,116% since October 4th. My vacation fund could use one or two stocks like that! :-)

My Top 24 for 2004

I thought I'd join in on APennyFor's Best of 2004 Bandwagon Project. These aren't necessarily my best posts of the year, but just ones that stood out to me as I went through my archives. This list may be especially useful for those of you who are relatively new to this site. So here they are in almost chronological order (ok, I cheated and put 26 on the list but who's counting?):

The Chairman Dodges a Tsunami

Looks like Chairman MaoXian is back to trading after cancelling his vacation because his "Southeast Asian holiday destination was washed away". Talk about good timing! Anyway, today he's posted some quotes from Jim Cramer's book as well as a link to an article predicting troubles in China.

Watchlist for December 29, 2004

We're back to having new highs on the indices basically across the board. The SOX is still a notable exception as it continues to languish under its 200-day moving average. Still, this is a very tough market in which to be short.

I see it's been a while since I've posted charts. That's because the action has been pretty dull. We're just drifting around with a slight bias to the upside. I'll be sure to post some charts today though.

I'm seeing a lot more short candidates than I have in a while. I may try one or two if they trigger but I don't want to press my luck in this dull market.

I hope some of you caught that moon shot in TAYD yesterday.
