2010 investment themes are on my mind after reading Fred WIlson's post about what he's focusing on for 2010 in the venture capital space. I think it will be interesting to see what's at the forefront of people's minds right now. Please leave a comment and share your best idea for 2010 -- an individual stock, (inverse?) ETF, sector, commodity, cash, short the dollar?
I have no idea what mine is yet but I'm trying to figure it out very soon. I'm always drawn to promising mid-cap technology stocks though, so that's one place where I'll be doing research.

How about BEST (Shiner Inter.).? The stock is forming a nice base. It is a real small cap but in very good market space (China, Frozen packaging and anti counterfeiting).
Regarding 2010, it will depends on Uncle Ben. If the int. rate remain same there will be growth and if the interest rate go up will see negative impact in all markets.
Short Us Treasuries ie long - TBT
Hitting this one hard.
Long commodities - DBC
With short trades on Spot Silver and Gold and possibly long AUS/USD again????
Futures On Oil Just had a good win but out now. Look for more plays?
These I think could be the best plays, But who knows???
I have just bought a spot silver call option out till Sept?
Short FXA, or put option on FXA
Long Gold. Try DGP.
You know me - gold. I like silver even more for this year. Commodities in general. I am exactly opposite Mark above and like FXA as a bet against the dollar (and not FXC). I suspect there will be at least one "flight to safety" event this year that will present a huge buying opportunity for anti-dollar bets.
I am also looking into all things security. I had no idea cyber-security was so hot last year: FIRE, ARST, FTNT...
I like your idea on mid-cap tech. Can't wait for some ideas! :)
Take a look at the many Cloud Computing plays from SaaS (CRM, SFSF, ULTI) to IaaS (TMRK, RAX, SVVS, EQIX).
2010 will undoubtedly be the year of the Cloud. I also expect massive M&A in the tech space and specifically the cloud.
I live and work in Silicon Valley...we both know the scoop.
I do need another cloud play. I just sold my AMZN in my IRA which I bought in June 2007 mostly b/c of their web services (EC2, S3, etc.). I've been wanting to buy CRM for well over a year but somehow I've never jumped in. Thanks for the list, I'm gonna research the ones I'm not familiar with.
